Today, November 8th, and tomorrow, the 9th some vintage sellers on Etsy are participating in the Vintage Market Sale. Just enter VMS into a vintage search on Etsy and there will be some bargains to be had!

I have listed some new items at a discounted price and have marked down others.  They are in the VMS section of my shop!

Convo me if you’ve had your eye on something in the shop and we just might be able to work out a deal.  I’m in the SALE spirit this weekend!

These are things I have just listed or will be listing soon.

I’m on a Roll… October 6, 2008

I’ve got butter on my pants!  Boom-CHA

2 in one day.  Special for you because you’re special.  Blogging is like that, spurts and spells (most of mine, dry).

I had such a good rummage/yard sale day on Saturday.

I met my friend at a church rummage sale first thing Saturday morning and got some good bits for the shop plus a huge framed papyrus with all the Egyptian gods painted on it for the growing collection of Ancient Egyptian art and artifacts in the boys room.  After the Unitarian church sale we went to Charlie and Pat’s rummage sale were I pick up 2 beautiful vintage Italian Christmas creches.  You don’t have to celebrate the holiday to have a good eye, my pretend Jewish great grandma always used to say!  On the way to drop my friend off back home we squeezed in a yard sale.    We got some cool games and random goodness.  I hit “just one more sale” (or two) on the way home and hit the MOTHER LOAD.  You know how when you pull up to a yard sale and you know if it’s a match or not.  I parked and immediately began scooping up the scores.  I really wanted all the other folks to vacate the premises and claim this one as MINE.  I bought a pair of vintage roller skates all rusted and lovely:

3 framed vintage children’s albums.  Some framed funky prints, an atomic tea cup and saucer that had a tin sheriff’s bandage in it, and 2 metal tables that are the most perfect shade of green. They are keepers.

Photo does not capture the olive-y greatness that these possess.

I told the woman I loved her taste and stuff and we had a great conversation.  I even slipped her my card, which was my challenge to myself of the day.  She let me into the garage, which was blocked off ( I had already asked about buying a metal globe located in the cave twice), and showed me 2 boxes of dolls. This beauty caught my eye and I bought the boxes off the cool woman with fabulous taste (you should have seen the house!).  A kind flickr flickrer informed me it’s a Japanese pose doll.  She’s fetching.  I’ll be posting her and some other finds in my shop today and tomorrow.  I hope she goes to a great home.  I had a blast acquiring her.

Here is an old Japanese ad featuring pose dolls:

Perfect for Halloween or just plain scaring your engaged friends!  Just wanted to let you know what I’ve been up to this weekend.  Stocking the shop.  These are my favorite from this weekends postings.  I scored the little Kewpies  at Brimfield and they were so creepy I had to love them.

The listing reads,

‘Til death do us part…

Up for your consideration is this vintage couple ready to tie the knot although I think they are too young to tie one on.

They stand soberly at 4 inches tall and are dressed in the finest and most delicate crepe paper gown and tux. Their bodies are made of plastic but their hearts are made of love.

They are in good vintage condition, especially considering how fragile crepe paper is. Her gown has some spotting on the bottom near the hem. The photos show this accurately.

These two are perfect for use as a cake topper, an assemblage piece on the perils of young marriage or for your freaky baby wedding doll collection!

I won’t make a habit of advertising here but it’s Sunday and this is all I got people.  🙂

You can find them here if you are so moved!

Snippets of Brimfield September 9, 2008

Sometimes something is so great it’s just hard to write about.  I’m having greatness block.  It also doesn’t help that my (few) photos from the trip are crappy.  But it was so much fun that it didn’t even occur to me to take a photo until we sat down for lemonade and a yucky gyro.

Well not that you were were so excited for my photos, what with that kind of send up, but turns out they’re not in my iphotos.  I did want to share a photo of my friend Lauren modeling some colonial bling I picked up for my favorite little Red Coat but nada. I will keep searching and add them if they turn up.

Found!

Kate, Lauren and I piled into my car and we set out early but not before we bageled up.  We got on the highway and Kate, who I was told by Lauren knew how to get there, turned and asked, “Anyone know how to get there?”.  Turns out Kate pulled through and got us there (she was a little less successful at estimating the miles until the next bathroom on the way home but some stories aren’t for sharing).  We got there and encountered no lines into town, got a choice parking spot (there is ABSOLUTELY NO parking on the street, remember this as it’s important later), and got a jump on the shopping.  As much as someone can get a jump when they go on the LAST day of the sale.  We were supposed to go Saturday but we postponed due to F.O.R. (fear of rain).  I will admit that I cried a little and took a nap on Saturday due to disappointment but rallied on Sunday.

Kate and Lauren both have great taste which was to my advantage as they helped me find scores for the shop but was heartbreaking when they purchased items I coveted for myself.  I will try and get a photo of the artwork Kate bought.  Painfully wonderful.  I can’t complain though because I cleaned up.  Mostly I got things for the shop but I did get a metal top kitchen table.  It has blue legs and a seriously cool faux bois top.  It remains to be seen if we can figure out a way to get it through our back door though but let’s stick to the positives.

This is the artwork that Kate grabbed from the same stall I purchased the table from.  Just look at the burlap, the circles, the teal and the red!  Oh be still my jealous heart.

The favorite shop of the day was this, dare I risk sounding like an old lady, cute couple from North Carolina.  We were all a little jealous of our perception of their lifestyle, freewheelin’ secondhand stuff across the country and looking good while doing it.  They had some really cool stuff.  Lauren bought a playing card sorter, cigarette holder, soap dish mystery tray and cover with funky mod birds that she cradled for the rest of the day.

Here’s a sneak peek of some of my purchases.

This is a Popsie Doll.  You pull the little guy’s body down and a sign reading, “Happy Birthday Gorgeous” pops out of his head.

Lauren picked out this beauty and it sold almost as soon as I listed it.  Wine’s on me.

And speaking of wine, this is a bar set with corks, a wine opener and a bottle opener.  I am developing a thing for little wooden men.  Don’t worry about it.

I am a sucker for original packaging.  I’m planning on selling this Scrappy 16mm film on Etsy but I am worried it will be chopped up for “assemblage” art.  Which I enjoy but only if it uses stuff that’s already busted. Is that obnoxious to say something to that effect when posting in my shop?  I feel that way about old books too.  Breaks my heart to think of them cut up.

This metal shoe has a screw hole in the top like maybe it was part of a mannequin. Anyone seen anything like this before?  Any information welcome.

Again with the faux bois, this is a mechanical bingo caller. You pull a lever and it generates a square.

I got tons more stuff that I’m excited to share with you but I haven’t taken photos yet.

The final story of the day, which involves the parking I asked you to remember, takes place when we were leaving.  We pulled over (and parked) on the main road to load up the kitchen table.  We had a plan, I’d get the table, Kate would run and get her uncut Monopoly money she was sorry she passed up, and Lauren would get us some of Grandpa’s potato skins and Grandma’s apple brown betty.  I packed up the car and Lauren came back with the yums and we DEVOURED the skins while waiting, still by the side of the road, for Kate to come back.  I had the plate in my hand and a skin in my mouth when I heard a loud rap at the window.  I looked up to see an annoyed bike cop.  I got the window down, while still holding onto the the plate, and explained that we were just loading up.  And with perfect timing after he left Lauren said, “ON POTATO SKINS!”  I will admit that we were hungry, tired and a little punchy but never have I had better fake cheese nor giggled so hard in the face of the LAW.  We moved on down the road a bit to catch up with Kate, who may have made a stop at the fried dough stand – who would request such a thing?  We got another aggrivated cop at the window, it wasn’t as funny with the brown betty.

So that was our Brimfield trip.  Good friends, good finds, good fun, good food, and an all around good time.  We’re going to do it again in May.

Skins and scores for all my friends!

Just as I am not qualified to dispense dietary tips or etiquette lessons, I feel a little funny writing an Etsy “round-up” with one sale under my belt. But I thought it would be helpful for me, and maybe to you, to have all the tips, tricks and links that I am quickly amassing gathered in one spot.

I have been immersed in Etsy this past week. I have dabbled in Etsy from the buyers side but it’s a whole different ball of wax over here on the sellers side. It has been fun staging my shots, figure out the lighting (still not right), researching information about my items and learning the Etsy ropes in general. Posting is a much longer process than I anticipated. A wise woman tried to tell me that it was exhausting having an Etsy shop and now I hang on her every word.

Here are some links that I am finding useful as I dive into the etSEA:

Here is a thread I started in the site help section of the forums titled What Else Don’t I Know About Etsy?

I found much of the information posted above in this thread. Thank you to all the Etsians took the time to share.

Did your parents ever read you the book about Cold Pricklies and Warm Fuzzies? It’s a, ahem, vintage children’s book my parents used to read to my brother and I in an effort to teach us about manners. We are not glowing endorsements but my point is the other sellers on Etsy so far have been total Warm Fuzzies. Very helpful and willing to share their knowledge to help out someone potentially “in competition” with them.

If you have any Etsy seller Tips or Tricks not listed above please feel free to share.

I am still wondering if there is an Etsy Vintage community/group/team that I could join? Anyone know?

Fyi I can’t put up a cute little Etsy button on WP so I have listed my shop on the blogroll for now, until I decide if I am going to jump to another server and photoless posts bother me more than posts with photos that do not really pertain to the text so here are a few shots from the shop:

Who Am I Kidding? June 22, 2008

Here is what summertime REALLY means to me:

Yard Sales! With a few rummages thrown in and an estate sale sprinkled here and there!

Yesterday was a fruitful day. My big little guy and I had took some time to ourselves and we hit the sales.

All the old guys and I scoured the garage at our first estate sale. It had been striped of all the vintage tools by the time my son and I got there. I did come up with this beauty. It will go well with the orange shoe shine stand my brother gave me a few years ago. Check out that wooden container for the shine!

I picked this up at the same estate sale. 1 dollar. I think it was a salt or pepper shaker at one time. It’s heavy and delightfully bug eyed. I am smitten.

I also picked up these cameras for 8 dollars a piece. I’ve got a collection going now. Mostly vintage super 8s with a few cameras sneaking in.

I also got these books at a thrift store last week. I’m going to do a separate post to share their illustrated goodness.

I rescued this vintage textile from a yard sale.

It’s not exactly my style (I AM a sucker for orange) but I feel like it was lying there, indignant at the low price tag stuck on it’s rich fibers, calling for my help. I’m a saver.  Anyone know where it’s from?

My soon to be 6 year old passed by the plastic toys and went right for this at another yard sale:

He asked the woman having the yard sale how much it was and she said, “Are your parents interested in this?” Like I was using my kid to try and get a lower price. I didn’t want to offend her with what I was thinking, “Are you freakin’ kidding me? That is not going in MY living room!”. So I assured her it was all my boy’s idea. He bought it for 5 dollars and repeated a number of times throughout the day, “Isn’t it beautiful mom?” He’s hooked and I could not be more proud.

The store called me today, the kind of call that doesn’t need a phone. The textile portion of the store was one score after another. I went looking for something to hang at the end of the hallway to try and stop the cool air from escaping and found a thick plain white cotton curtain with big ole grommets at the top. It may have been a shower curtain in another life but will be perfect in the living room doorway. I also went looking for a some sheets to sew together and make a light summer comforter cover. Our current cover is dark brown with black circles and I love it but I’m feeling like something a little lighter would be good for summer. I found this and it’s already sewn on three sides. I just have to put on some button holes or more than likely, sew on some velcro to make a closure. I really like the colors and the swirly flower pattern that’s not too sickeningly floral. And then I came across these vintage gold brocade curtains. Yes! I am not usually a big brocade gal but these will do nicely, if not in the bedroom then somewhere else for sure.  edit:  This IKEA comforter is so scratchy.  Going to have to keep looking…

As I was jamming the stroller with all this yardage, I spied this little beauty on the floor in the children’s section. I grabbed it and took it to the register to ask the price. The guy asked if it was worth $5 to me and I said it WAS marked up with crayons and so he said, “$2.99?”!!!!!!!!!!! SOLD. It also came with some wooden doll furniture and a sofa set that looks like it came from the doll house thrift store.

If you think this house is really cute and would be great in your kid’s playroom, you should probably stop reading as we have big remodeling plans for this house. She is going to be turned into a HAUNTED HALLOWEEN HOUSE! Think black paint, spider webs, blood red shutters and many more spooky surprises. We will have to do something terrifying with this television. Maybe a tiny print of this photo taken at the zoo yesterday. It was in some weird little closed off cabin. My big guy said, “That is creepy!” and I immediately thought of Lost. It’s my nod to Jacob’s Cabin:

I will share the photos once we’ve finished, closer to Halloween. I’ll also share the story of how I went from a “it’s a manufactured, commercialized, sugar-filled’ Halloween hater to a full on Halloween enthusiast.

Hold your breath.

edit: Tone check. I’m totally mocking myself. I reread the title and along with the end of my last post I was afraid I was sounding like I was getting too big for my own (thrifted) britches!

Money Well Spent June 5, 2008

We’ve had a rainy couple of days here and as you may have discerned yesterday, in the battle of grey day vs my camera, grey and cloudy kicks my butt every time. And my homemade light box had lots of spunk but not much light. But I just can not wait to share these scores.

I got most of these gems from Charlie and Pat’s (their big sale is this Saturday if you are local). A few are from a recent church rummage sale. I toy with the idea of getting a tattoo from time to time, and really, deep down I know it’ll never happen. But the word Rummage tops my current never gonna get it tattoo list. I also keep a mental list of punk band names and you and I both know that will never pan out. Maybe someday (maybe this summer?) I’ll open my own junk shop and there will always be rockin’ tunes playing and classic Bollywood clips showing and craft circles craftin’ in the back room with tattooed types lingering amongst my riches. It’s a nice daydream. Let me see if I can get an etsy shop up first or manage my first eBay sale. Baby steps.

I picked up this vintage weaving loom, primarily for the graphics. I was also impressed it had a boy on the cover. Maybe he was able to weave a toy gun cozy or something. Whatever he made, I’m sure it was lots of fun!

I wrongly imagined our stairway to be light-filled and photogenic and yet still I will show you this darling mug. As you may have read from my previous post, Spelling Lesson, (I’ve always wanted to reference myself) I am not afraid of the traditionally defined “bad words” but I do, however, feel like washing my own mouth out with soap after merely typing the word, “darling”. Please excuse. But she is cute, right?

I got a whole series of these wonderful cookbooks. The illustrations deserve to be set free from the binding and framed but I have a hard time cutting into books. I’ve done it a few times but it feels illegal.

I also got a huge plastic orange tray and the smaller purple one you can see here with the cookbooks. They aren’t even part of a set, these two trays, but they are perfect together. I had visions of cupcakes and birthday parties when I saw them and for $4 it would have been wrong NOT to get them.

Here are some of the illustrations. Believe it or not, I am trying to edit my photographs and not plaster this post with them all but it’s kind of hard.

I bought this because I am not one to pass by anything touting an E-Z pour function.

This vintage beauty is the only thrift store score from today’s collection. I got her for 99 cents. I do not usually dig in the stuffed animal bins of my favorite thrift store. Mostly because it’s terrifying and sneezy but she drew me to her and now she sits atop a massive pile of crap in my craft room. Not totally unlike her previous residence.

I can’t find any marking on her. Any toy experts know anything about her? I reckon she’s German made but I have no idea.

And here is some cheer to brighten this rainy day. A portion of my collection of thrifted and family tins with a little bit of my childhood doll collection thrown in. These are also in my craft room that I hope to have finished to share with you sometime THIS SUMMER.

I hope you enjoy looking at this crap as much as I enjoying finding it!

Stuff Overload May 5, 2008

The other day my blog stats spiked and I couldn’t tell why. I think I figured it out. I swung by Charlie and Pat’s today (the best thrift store on the planet if you haven’t been playing along) and I saw Charlie hand a folded slip of paper to another customer. Turns out along with a purchase, Charlie is handing out my blog address. Charlie introduced me to the recipient of the blog address handoff, a local firefighter! Another woman in the shop patted my little guy’s head and then my arm and told me she had seen my blog. Thanks for tooting my horn Charlie and a big hello and howdy to all my peeps from the shop! Not who I imagined my target readership to be (hi mom!) but totally and completely perfect. It’s moments like this, that can’t be photographed and cropped, that make my town “beautiful”. This nomad just might be home.

And now on to the good stuff. Some of this is from C&P’s shop and other bits are from a rummage sale I recently hit.

Who can’t use a little waxed linen lacing cord and a oven thermometer?

I think this is a vintage handmade knitting bag. The fabric has a nice heft to it and I particularly like the color of the lining. I will be putting this up in my shop, when I have a shop!

This fabric caught my eye. I usually like to work with linen or cotton and this one is neither but I couldn’t pass up the colors and the circles.

This fabric is super wrinkly and much cuter in person. It’s a grey silk with little flowers and pears. 2 yards – $2.

Orange and pink? Every time. I googled Metsovaara and think I got a score.

I bought this mostly because it’s orange but also because it’s “all-powerful”. Another for the shop-to-be.

Ahhhh, can you see those price stickers? On the right are 5 buttery cloth napkins with a beautiful linen one below it. The ones of the left are pillow cases.

Random toys and craft supplies.

These are possibly my favorite of the rummage sale. I bought a large Weis wooden file box and when I got home to inspect my stuff I found these tucked in the box. They are printed by Signal Press in Evanston Illinois, no date. Anyone know what they were originally for? Book marks? They’re seem a little big though…?

I also got some beautiful old books.

This was hidden inside one of the books published by the H.K. Fly Company in 1919. It’s a homemade card/book mark that has sandpaper in the belly of the cat. My favorite part is how stained the book is, looks like this little guy has lived in this book for a long time.

And lastly (phew!) this little illustration is for my brother who was born to sport a fancy walrus moustache.

Thrift Store Book Score April 25, 2008

I’m not always good at taking time away from the kids and doing something just by myself. My sweet one pushed me out of the door the other morning and I spent 5 glorious hours farting around. It was lovely.

The first place I hit was the Goodwill, as any sane person would. It was pretty much a no go for kids clothes but the book bins were overflowing with vintage goodness. When I took my stash to the counter, the previously frowning tattooed chick who rung me up totally admired my taste in books and I quote, “These went out before I could take them myself!” I’m not too ashamed to admit it put a little lift in my step.

I’m still swooning over this ebay find, a vintage toy wash bucket that I’m storing my new finds in.

This is my new favorite old book. Check out the illustrations! I think the first and last book are in Swedish. Anyone know? Katie?

And I hope I don’t get in trouble with the Magicians for sharing the following with you!

I’m not that familiar with the Pippi stories but you’ve got to admire her spunk and style.

Can you see the red hair stuck in the pages of the Pippi book? Hair from a little redheaded fan, a Pippi doll or maybe from Pippi herself?!

(I took these photos in the closet dressed in a Darth Vader costume with my eyes closed. Well kinda.)
